July 23 SU-VLPR 2009这个星期在北京参加“1st Sino-US Summer School on Vision, Learning, and Pattern Recognition”，是NSF、NLPR、Google和Intel共同举办的暑期学校。今年举办的VLPR水平还是非常高的，用主办者的话说“We are truly impressed by the immensely enthusiastic response to this summer school. We received nearly 400 applications from a group of highly qualified individuals coming from 85 Universities in China, US, Singapore, and Russia. Our admission committee worked hard to select 130 attendees, including PhD/master students, faculty, researchers, across all regions of China and US. We regret that many highly qualified individuals have to be turned away due to space limitation.”如果看看主讲者的名单就更是让人兴奋，“We express our sincere gratitude towards a group of 15 distinguished researchers from leading University in US to teach at this summer school: Misha Belkin, Alex Berg, Tamara Berg, Bob Collins, Tony Jebara, Yann LeCun, Yanxi Liu, Yi Ma, Silvio Savarese, Sinisa Todorovic, Zhuowen Tu, Eric Xing, and Song-Chun Zhu. Without their generous volunteering of their time, this school would not happen.”确实是难得的高水平暑期学校。
课程安排的非常紧凑，上午8点半开始，到晚上8点半都有安排，其中白天的时间整个用于听讲座，一般上午安排两个，下午两个，中午吃饭的时候还要进行小组讨论。这一点倒是非常像去年的ICMLDM，这种高强度的学术交流还是很有效果的。今年的VLPR更加关注于视觉，因此相对来说听起来也比较有趣，很多研究成果都有视频或者图像的效果。不少工作都给人留下了深刻的印象，从成果的角度上讲，关于视觉的研究的确还是比较有趣的。
